Is the Preventive Care Plan Worth It?
To help you decide if pet insurance with Preventive Care is worth it, think about how often your pet needs routine care each year. Puppies, kittens, and senior pets often receive more routine and wellness care. This might make it a great time to enroll your pet since you could be reimbursed for many of those costs, as long as they're covered under your plan.
Plus, these kinds of routine expenses — like vaccines, parasite prevention, and annual exams — are ways you can help prevent or catch health issues before they become a potential harm to your pet or a high-cost bill.
Another situation in which Preventive Care could be worth it is if your pet has health conditions not covered by insurance. By saving money on routine and wellness expenses through Preventive Care reimbursements, you might have more money to allocate to other potentially costly — but essential — vet care expenses.
Enhance a Standard Policy With Proactive Coverage
Our optional Preventive Care plan can work in tandem with our award-winning3 standard pet insurance policy to help keep your pet healthy and be there when they're sick.
From America's favorite veterinarian, Dr. Hunter Finn:
Prevention and being proactive in your pet's care will allow them to live better-quality lives for longer. Things we used to overlook but have become mainstays in preventive care, such as dental cleanings, are so important. But they can be quite costly, especially if you aren't prepared for these costs when you get a pet.

Preventive Care Plan FAQs
You can add Preventive Care to a MetLife Pet Insurance plan, but we don’t currently offer it as a stand-alone option. When requesting a quote, you can add Preventive Care during the “Customize Your Plan” step. Below the “Plan Details,” click Customize this Plan to choose the Preventive Care coverage you want. Or call us for more coverage options.
If you already have a MetLife Pet plan, you can call us to add Preventive Care during your annual policy renewal period. This is the only time you can do so. Once enrollment is complete, you’ll have to wait until your next renewal period to add it.
Standard pet insurance typically covers unexpected expenses related to diagnostics and treatment when your pet isn’t feeling their best. If your dog or cat breaks a bone, catches a stomach bug, or needs cancer treatment, a pet insurance policy may provide coverage.
On the other hand, Preventive Care provides coverage for pet expenses related to keeping your pet healthy — like routine, wellness, or preventative costs. Annual exams, teeth cleanings, vaccinations, and parasite prevention are some of these types of expenses, and they’re typically covered under our Preventive Care plan.

You can be reimbursed up to the benefit limits listed in your plan for each wellness expense. Visit the vet, file a claim for your pet’s routine care, then receive a reimbursement for covered expenses. Once you reach the annual reimbursement limit for that expense, you’re responsible for all related vet costs until your policy renews.
For example, if your plan covers routine vet exam fees up to $75 and your pet’s exam fee was $50, you could receive a full reimbursement of $50 and still have $25 left to cover another routine exam that year, if needed. This could be especially helpful for kittens, puppies, and senior pets who may have multiple routine exams in a single year.6
MetLife Pet does offer other wellness reimbursement options — give us a call to discuss them.
To file a claim, follow the same process to submit a claim as you would with other vet bills covered under your standard plan. The best — and typically easiest — way is logging into the MetLife Pet mobile app or desktop portal, following the steps to upload the required documents, and hitting submit.
Once we’ve received all of the necessary records and invoices, claims are typically processed within 5 days.7 You can receive direct payments — through options like Zelle®8 and PayPal — or a check in the mail for your reimbursements.
Since this plan is an optional add-on, it’s an additional cost on top of your insurance premium. Prices vary by state and other factors, but the money you can save on routine care often outweighs the cost of adding Preventive Care coverage to your pet insurance policy.
