With costs for so many things on the rise — including pet care — pet insurance can be a valuable way to help you make unexpected vet bills less of a burden.

But finding the best pet insurance for multiple pets is no small task, and your fur family deserves coverage that works for everyone. Let’s dig into the details of how our multi-pet plan works, the costs, and what makes our plan one of a kind.

How Does Pet Insurance for Multiple Pets Work?

When you insure multiple pets with one provider, you’ll likely have separate policies for each pet and a discount, if offered, will be applied to your premium. With MetLife Pet, we have a couple of different options.

Our unique Family Plan allows you to enroll up to three pets on one policy with a shared deductible and annual limit at a discounted rate.1,2,3 You get the same coverage customization options as an individual policy, but your selections apply to all pets on the plan as a whole.

If you choose to keep your fur family on separate, individual policies instead of opting into the Family Plan, we still offer a multi-policy discount4 for enrolling more than one pet. This allows for greater customization, if your pets would benefit from different coverage levels, while still saving money on premiums.

How shared deductibles and limits work

With a shared deductible, you only need to meet one deductible amount for all of your covered pets. Once you’ve met the deductible, covered costs for all pets on the policy are eligible for reimbursement up to your annual limit.2

So if you hit your deductible from just one of your pet’s vet bills, you could save more money on all of your other pets’ covered care compared to having separate deductibles for each.

With one annual limit, all pets on the policy contribute to one maximum reimbursement amount — there’s no per-pet limit.3 The benefit here is the flexibility of allocating more coverage to pets who may have different expense needs, while still ensuring all of your pets are covered.

For example, say you have three dogs on your Family Plan. Maybe one dog, Todd, has more expenses than the other two. Since your annual limit is shared across all three pups, you don’t have to worry about Todd’s covered expenses being denied due to an individual annual limit.

What Makes MetLife Pet Insurance Different?

Bottom line, we’re the only provider offering a family plan — giving you the option of covering multiple pets with just one policy.1,5 In choosing MetLife Pet Insurance’s Family Plan, you can:

  • Enroll up to three pets on a single policy
  • Mix cats and dogs
  • Get reimbursed up to 90% on covered expenses for all pets on the policy6
  • Have one deductible and annual limit shared across all pets on the plan2,3

If you have more than three pets, you can group them together in two or more Family Plans.1

Purrfect perks you can drool over

With all of our policies, we offer conveniences and benefits designed to align with your and your family’s needs. Some of these include:

  • 0-day waiting periods on accidents and optional Preventive Care plan coverage7
  • A mobile app to manage claims and vet records, get personalized pet care tips, and find nearby pet services
  • Coverage for lost pet advertising and pet theft
  • Grief counseling for when pets cross the rainbow bridge8
  • Free 24/7 vet telehealth chat9

Already have a policy — or multiple — with another provider through your employer? When you switch to a MetLife Pet plan, we can cover conditions that may be considered pre-existing under a new policy if they’re already covered under your current provider.10 So if your dog’s chronic allergies are covered under your current plan, they’ll still be covered when you switch to MetLife Pet.

How Do You Use Pet Insurance for Multiple Pets?

Whether you have a single pet or multiple pets covered, the process of using your pet insurance works the same way.

  1. Pay your premium: To keep your plan active and use your benefits, ensure you pay your premium when it’s due.
  2. Take your pet to the vet: When an illness or injury strikes, take your pet to any licensed vet in the U.S. for care. Pay the veterinary bill yourself, but keep the invoice.
  3. Submit your claim: Submit the invoice and relevant medical records from the visit through your preferred claims method — like online or through our mobile app.
  4. Get money back: Once you’ve met your deductible, we’ll reimburse you for covered costs at your reimbursement rate, up to your annual limit.3,6

We know that when it comes to having multiple pets, getting reimbursed quickly can make a big difference in keeping your budget intact. That’s why we work hard to ensure most claims are processed within 5 days.

How Much Does Multi-Pet Insurance Cost?

Your pet health insurance premium can vary based on a few factors. Each of your pet’s species, breed, gender, age, and any pre-existing conditions all impact the cost. Where you live, your coverage selection, adding more pets, and applicable discounts will also change your rate.

MetLife Pet cat insurance starts at $7 per month for one cat, and dog insurance starts at $16 per month for one dog.11 Enrolling multiple pets can increase these prices, as can customizing your reimbursement rate, deductible, and annual limit.2,3,6
