Pet Insurance for Multiple Pets: A Family Plan Like No Other

Three Minutes
Mar 19, 2024

Your family seems to keep growing! First, it was you and the cat. Now, two has become four — or even six. It may feel like your head is spinning after a couple of kids plus a cat, a dog, or both. All that love can come with more responsibilities — more cans of food, toys to buy, and trips to the vet.

As you review your annual expenses, you may be thinking about how your family will handle increasing pet needs and veterinarian costs. Emergency veterinary care can cost you anywhere between $800 – $1,500.3 Read on to learn how pet insurance can help reimburse you for covered pet expenses and how it can help support you and your growing family.

Why You May Need Pet Insurance for Multiple Pets

Over 3.2 million pets were adopted between 2021 and 2022 alone.4 Maybe you were a part of that number who welcomed another four-legged friend into your home during the COVID-19 pandemic. Perhaps you’re an empty nester who needed a young pup to keep you company in the garden while your cat snoozed in a sunny corner inside. No matter your reason, more Americans have found themselves taking care of more than one pet.

Despite this love of pets, only roughly 2.5% of pets are insured in the United States.5 There are several reasons why this gap between adoption rates and insurance coverage may exist. One may be that many people don’t know how pet insurance works. You may be leaving money on the table by footing the bill without pet insurance every time your dog eats something they shouldn’t. The good news is that a pet insurance policy can give you some control over potential future veterinary expenses.

Finding the best pet insurance for multiple pets can be overwhelming. MetLife Pet Insurance was named winner of the “Pet Insurance of the Year” Award in the 2024 Pet Independent Innovation Awards Program, in part due to our multipet policy that allows up to three pets on a single policy with a shareable deductible.1 There are no upper age limits or breed exclusions on our policies.

How Does Pet Insurance for Multiple Pets Work?

Up to three pets can be covered on one plan with a single deductible with MetLife Pet Insurance policies. This is the amount pet owners are responsible for under the terms of the policy before they can be reimbursed. Also, the covered expenses of all pets on the policy can contribute to the deductible. Once you’ve met the deductible, all covered pets costs on the policy are eligible for reimbursement.

Here’s how the pet insurance claims process works:

  • Pay the monthly premium: Pet parents pay a monthly premium for the policy, in a similar way that you may pay a monthly premium for car insurance.
  • Take your pet to the vet: When an illness or injury strikes, take your pet to any licensed vet for care. Pay the veterinary bill yourself, but keep those statements.
  • Submit your claim: Send the vet bill statement and any medical records from the visit to MetLife Pet Insurance.
  • Receive reimbursement: Once you’ve met your deductible, MetLife Pet Insurance will reimburse you for covered costs at whatever your reimbursement rate is, usually within 10 days.6

How Much Does Multipet Insurance Cost?

Your pet health insurance premium can vary based on a few major factors that impact the cost. How many pets you have, their breeds and ages, where you live, their sexes7, and if they have any preexisting conditions determine the amount you will pay, as does your coverage selection.

MetLife Pet Insurance policies are customizable, too. We remain flexible in a competitive market with customizable coverage options and reimbursement percentages up to 100%.8 You can select a higher or lower deductible and even add on different care types to your plan.9

  • Have older pets that need routine care? No problem! We can offer an optional Wellness Plan to help mitigate regular veterinary checkups.10
  • Want preventative care or more coverage? Tailor your policy to get as little or as much coverage as you need for your cats and dogs. From preventative care and vaccines to emergency care, our policies can flex to cover pet expenses that can arise frequently.
  • Already have a policy or multiple policies with another provider? MetLife Pet Insurance will cover previously covered preexisting conditions your pet may have.² When you switch to a MetLife Pet Insurance plan, you can get illness and injury coverage soon after, as well as coverage for other covered veterinary visits, medications, and other eligible expenses to ensure continued care.11, 12
