Does Pet Insurance Cover Annual Visits?

4 min read

Annual vet visits (aka routine exams) are a great opportunity to help make sure your pet is in good health. Having coverage for this expense can help you focus more on your pet’s well-being and less on the cost of care.

Routine exams are generally not covered by standard pet insurance policies. But MetLife Pet can help reimburse you for routine vet visits, up to your annual benefit limit, through our optional Preventive Care. Learn more about how this coverage works and other routine expenses you could save on.

MetLife Pet Offers Coverage for Annual Vet Visit Costs

Through MetLife Pet’s Preventive Care plan add-on, you could be reimbursed for the cost of your pet’s routine exam up to your plan’s benefit limit. Having pet insurance that covers annual exams can be helpful in sticking to a budget or reducing vet expenses you know you’re going to pay each year.

Generally, puppies and kittens need multiple routine vet visits in their first year to administer vaccinations and ensure they’re growing healthily. Adult dogs and cats typically need just one routine exam per year, and senior cats and dogs are advised to see the vet twice a year for routine checkups.1,2

Getting money back on these routine costs could also mean having more money in your pocket to save for unexpected vet costs — or general pet expenses.

How does annual vet visit coverage work?

Through MetLife Pet’s optional Preventive Care, you can typically get reimbursed for annual vet visits up to a specific dollar amount. Once you reach the benefit limit listed in your plan, you’ll be responsible for all related routine vet exam fees until your plan renews.

To be eligible for reimbursement, your pet’s exam must also happen after your plan’s waiting period ends. Our Preventive Care benefits have a 0-day waiting period, so you could take your pet for a wellness checkup the day after you enroll and be eligible to submit a claim.

To get reimbursed, submit your wellness claim just like you would for any injury or illness claim. Visit the vet, pay the bill, submit the claim with relevant vet records, and wait for your reimbursement via your preferred method. We strive to provide quick reimbursements, with most claims processed within 5 days.3

MetLife Pet’s Preventive Care plan must be added to a standard insurance policy. We don’t currently offer a stand-alone wellness plan.

Does MetLife Pet help you cover other types of vet visits?

Yes! You can typically get coverage for vet exam fees through MetLife Pet’s standard accident and illness insurance policy — as long as the condition doesn’t fall under any exclusions in your plan.

Sometimes your pet gets sick or hurt and needs to see their vet. Depending on the purpose of their visit, it could be a:

  • Primary care visit: This is when your pet goes to the vet to figure out why they don’t feel well. Your vet can determine the cause of the injury or illness and provide treatment options.
  • Specialty or emergency visit: When your pet needs care that your normal vet can’t provide, they might see a vet specialist or go to an emergency vet.

An important distinction is that primary, specialty, and emergency visits can be covered under MetLife Pet’s standard insurance policy. Annual vet visits can be reimbursed only through the Preventive Care plan add-on.

Why Is It Important To Have Coverage for Annual Vet Exams?

Pet insurance that covers annual vet visits through MetLife Pet’s optional Preventive Care can help you reduce expected annual vet costs, and potentially help you prevent high-cost vet bills in the future. When you can stay on top of your pet’s routine exams, vets may be able to catch early warning signs of health issues before they get bigger or more costly. It could also mean a better prognosis for your pet if treatment can begin early.1,2

MetLife Pet’s optional preventive care can reimburse you for other routine care costs, too — like health screens, parasite prevention, vaccinations, or teeth cleaning. All of which can be important in helping with early detection, prevention, or maintenance of health issues.1,2

Plus, being able to get up to 90% back on covered costs if your pet does get sick or hurt could make having a MetLife Pet Insurance policy worth it.4
