Training Your New Puppy

Adding a pet to your family is sure to add lots of love and joy to your household. However, it can also be a lot of work if you don't know what to expect. For example, a puppy requires much more maintenance than a grown dog or cat. While the temptation of getting a puppy may be strong, there are some important things to remember if you're planning on adding a puppy to your family. Here is some helpful advice for you to consider before bringing your new puppy home.

Puppy Proofing

First, it's important to prepare and "puppy-proof"; your home before adding a puppy to your family. This includes moving things from the floor that your puppy may be able to chew on or get injured by. You might also want to consider a bed for your new furry friend. It's a good idea to wrap a ticking clock in a blanket and put it near the bed to emulate its mom's heartbeat. A warm water bottle helps as well. You should also be prepared with food and a crate where your puppy can stay when you need to leave the house. Having these things prepared before you bring your puppy home will make your life a whole lot easier when it comes to caring for and training the puppy.

Establish Rules

Next, establish the ground rules as soon as possible. Decide if you want your puppy to sleep in bed with you, or if it should have its own bed. Is it allowed on the furniture or not? Deciding on the house rules before any training begins is the best way to keep it consistent and avoid confusion.  Decide on the level of aggression you will tolerate, and how you plan to regulate behavior.

Potty Training

When it comes to house breaking, be patient. A puppy cannot hold its bladder for long and will definitely need frequent bathroom breaks. Take it to the designated bathroom area as often as possible and give positive reinforcement when he goes in the proper place. On the other hand, don't be too hard on your puppy if it has an accident on the carpet or in its crate, and certainly don't 'rub his nose in it'. This is an outdated and cruel method.

Leaving your Puppy Alone

It's also important to get your puppy used to being alone. If you hear him whining in his crate, don't give in -- it only establishes that negative reinforcement works. While it's definitely heartbreaking to hear your puppy whimpering for love in the middle of the night, letting your puppy go through this for just a few days will drastically reduce the chance of it developing separation anxiety as it grows into an older dog.

Consider Dog Health Care

Finally, consider looking into pet health insurance plans for dogs. Providing health care for your pet isn't always affordable, but having the security of knowing your puppy will be able to receive treatment in case of a crisis is absolutely priceless. Plans are surprisingly affordable and provide a lifetime of peace of mind for you and your furry friend.
